He completed his graduate studies at the Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts(Tokyo Geidai). In 2010, "The Time Walker" won the Grand Prix of the Jury at the "Louis Vuitton Journeys Awards 2009," where Wong Kar Wai and Sofia Coppola served as jury members. The movie "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas" was released in 2017 and won the 41st Japan Academy Prize for Best Picture and Topic of the Year. Recently, he directed the drama "And Then, Live" (WOWOW) and wrote the screenplay for the film "Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight". He also directed the live-action drama version of "Yu Yu Hakusho," which will be distributed on Netflix in December 2023.
